OneIndia24News: Farhan Akhtar reveals why it took Marvel so long to find the first Muslim superhero | Exclusive

Farhan Akhtar made his Hollywood debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s much-talked-about superhero project, Ms Marvel, which is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. The actor-director is stoked about his brief but important role as Waleed. Waleed plays an important part in leading Kamala (Iman Vellani) to her grandmother as she discovers her roots and the source of her power. Farhan makes his entry in Episode 4 and, despite his short role, he’s kept the mystery of the possibility of Waleed returning to the series open-ended.

In an exclusive conversation with IndiaToday.in, the actor spoke about his favourite superheroes while growing up and why he thinks it took so long for Marvel to find their first Muslim superhero.

Farhan, who were the superheroes that left an impression on you while growing up?

Oh, God! I don’t know where to start. Anything that I would watch, I would become that character. When I watch Spiderman, I would put my hand and leg on one side of a cupboard and climb up. And my mum would just keep looking at me. I was easily impressionable by comic books and especially by superhero characters. So, I think Spiderman is the one that registers the most.

The reactions to your character have been amazing, but fans are also divided about the fact that it was so brief. Your thoughts?

Oh! It has been really good. People are enjoying it and what’s most important is that people must enjoy the show and they should enjoy Kamala’s journey. I think that’s what’s important. And that is what is happening from episode 1. People have been invested in the show. For us, it is really exciting because it is culturally representing us. It makes it very special. And that was the most exciting part of me being involved with the show. Because of what the show represents. Whether it is my family or my friends, my kids and their friends, everyone like you is very excited to have seen me on this show. All the same question – Is Waleed actually dead? They are still asking me that and I am not allowed to answer it!

In a world that’s breaking norms, why do you think it took so long for a Muslim superhero to make its debut?

Obviously, I am not the person to answer this question. Honestly, I consider myself lucky to have been part of the very first one that has been created from the Marvel universe. There is such a buzz about the show. There is so much love coming in for the character of Kamala. I am sure it is going to open up doors and it will create more content. There has to be a first and it happens to be now. We should all be thankful that it is happening and we look forward to some more fun times.

If you had the choice to act opposite one superhero from MCU, who would it be and why?

After watching everything that has been released from there, I would say that I have a bias towards Iron Man and Robert Downey Jr. So it would possibly be him.
